SLP Civil – Meaning
A Special Leave Petition (Civil) is a petition filed under Article 136 of the Constitution of India before the Supreme Court, seeking special permission to appeal against a judgment or order passed by any court or tribunal in civil cases, where no direct appeal lies to the Supreme Court.
When Can It Be Filed?
- Against any judgment, decree, or order of a High Court in a civil matter.
- When a substantial question of law or grave injustice is involved.
- When there is no alternative remedy of appeal directly available.
Time Limit
- 90 days from the date of judgment/order of the High Court.
- 60 days if a review petition was filed in High Court and got dismissed.
Important Points
? Filing an SLP does not mean automatic admission — the Supreme Court first decides whether to grant leave.
? If leave is granted, the SLP becomes a Civil Appeal.
? The Court entertains SLPs only in cases of serious miscarriage of justice, not in every routine matter.
